Crab Paper Craft for Kids – Free Template

If your little ones love ocean animals, this Crab Paper Craft is going to be an absolute favorite! With a bold red half circle body, two folded paper claws raised up in a V shape, spindly black legs, giant googly eyes on stalks, and the most cheerful little smile, this crab is as charming as it is easy to make. Whether you're exploring ocean animals at home, planning a beach or under the sea theme in the classroom, or just looking for a fun summer craft, this paper crab is guaranteed to make a splash from the very first fold of the paper.

Why Kids Love This Craft

There's something wonderfully clever about this crab — the whole thing is built from folded circles, and kids absolutely love the moment the claws go on and it suddenly looks exactly like a real crab. The folding technique gives the claws a beautiful dimensional quality that makes the finished craft look far more impressive than the simple steps would suggest, and the googly eyes on their little stalks give every crab a hilariously expressive personality. It's a wonderful craft for building fine motor skills through folding, cutting, and gluing, and because every kid positions the claws and legs a little differently, no two crabs ever look exactly the same.

What You'll Need

  • Free printable Crab Paper Craft template from CraftyYak.com
  • Red paper for the crab body and claws (or print template directly on red paper to save time!)
  • Blue or light colored paper for the background
  • Tan or brown paper for the sandy ocean floor
  • Black marker for the legs, arms, mouth, and eye stalks
  • 2 googly eyes (1 inch)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to Make a Crab Paper Craft

Step 1 — Print and cut out the template. Download the free Crab Paper Craft template from CraftyYak.com and cut out all the circle pieces. Pro tip — print the template directly onto red paper to skip the coloring step entirely and save yourself a ton of time!

Step 2 — Fold all the circles in half. Fold every circle in half along the solid fold line. The largest circle becomes the body and the four smaller circles become the claws. This folding step is what gives the crab its wonderful 3D dimensional quality!

Step 3 — Create the sandy ocean floor background. Cut your tan or brown paper in a wavy pattern along the top edge to create a sandy ocean floor, then glue it along the bottom of your background paper. This sets the perfect underwater scene for your crab to live in!

Step 4 — Glue on the body. Glue the largest folded circle rounded side down slightly above the sand line. This is your crab's body — the flat edge faces up and the rounded belly faces down toward the sand.

Step 5 — Add the claws. Take the four remaining folded circles and arrange them in pairs above the body — flat sides facing each other and slightly open to create a V shape for each claw. Glue them in place and press firmly. This is every kid's favorite step and the moment the crab really comes to life!

Step 6 — Draw the details. Using a black marker draw the spindly legs coming out from the bottom sides of the body, the arm lines connecting the claws, the eye stalks coming up from the top of the body, and a cheerful smile across the front of the body.

Step 7 — Add the googly eyes. Glue a large googly eye to the tip of each eye stalk. The bigger the googly eyes the better — they give the finished crab an irresistibly expressive and hilarious personality!

Tips for Making It Even Better

  • Print the template directly onto red cardstock instead of regular paper — it saves time coloring and gives the finished crab a much bolder and more vibrant look.
  • Use a wavy scissors edge along the sand paper for an even more realistic ocean floor effect — kids love this little detail!
  • Add a few drawn on bubbles floating up from the crab in the background to complete the underwater scene and give the whole piece a polished finished look.
  • This crab looks amazing displayed alongside the paper plate orca for a full ocean animal classroom bulletin board scene!
