With sleepy eyes, a happy little smile, and a branch to dangle from, this adorable sloth comes together with just two paper plates and a handful of simple supplies. Whether you're exploring rainforest animals at home, planning a jungle unit in the classroom, or just looking for a creative afternoon activity, this craft is proof that life really is better in slow motion.

Why Kids Love This Craft

There's something irresistible about a sloth — and this craft captures every bit of that cozy, laid-back charm. Kids love that this one tells a little story: the sloth is actually hanging from a branch with leaves, making it feel more like a scene than just a face on a plate. It's a wonderful craft for building fine motor skills through cutting, coloring, and layering multiple pieces together, and the finished sloth looks so good it deserves a permanent spot on the wall.

What You'll Need

  • 6-inch paper plates x2
  • Paper
  • Coloring materials (brown, white, green)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Black marker

How to Make a Hanging Paper Plate Sloth

Step 1 — Color the paper plates brown. Paint or color both paper plates brown. One becomes the sloth's body and one becomes the head.

Step 2 — Cut out and color the template shapes. Cut out all the template pieces and color them as needed — brown for the arms, legs, and face; white for the eye mask; green for the leaves; and brown for the branch.

Step 3 — Glue the head, arm, and leg onto the body. Take the half-circle body plate and attach the head, one arm, and one leg into position, then glue them all down.

Step 4 — Glue the face onto the head. Attach the lighter brown face piece centered onto the head plate.

Step 5 — Glue the eye mask onto the face. Position the white eye mask shape over the face and glue it in place.

Step 6 — Draw the facial features. Use a black marker to draw sleepy closed eyes, a small nose, and a happy curved smile. This is where your sloth really comes to life!

Step 7 — Assemble the branch and leaves. Color, cut out, and glue the branch piece together, then attach the green leaves at each end for a lush rainforest feel.

Step 8 — Attach the sloth to the branch. Glue the sloth's arm and leg up onto the branch so it looks like your sloth is happily hanging. Let everything dry completely.

Your slow-motion superstar is ready to hang on the wall! 🦥

  • Use two shades of brown if you have them — a lighter brown for the face makes the sloth's features really pop.
  • Let kids draw their own sleepy eyes and smile for a personal touch — every sloth ends up with its own unique expression!
  • This craft looks amazing displayed as part of a rainforest wall alongside other jungle animal crafts.
