Why Kids Love This Craft
There's something genuinely exciting about making America's national bird — kids love that this eagle looks so realistic and impressive when it's all put together. The layered assembly keeps them engaged from start to finish, and each piece that gets added — the wing, the white head, the sharp beak, the talons — makes the eagle look more and more like the real thing. It's a wonderful craft for building fine motor skills through cutting, coloring, and careful gluing, and the finished eagle looks bold and striking enough to proudly display on any wall or bulletin board.
What You'll Need
- Printed template
- 6-inch paper plate or paper template
- Paints, markers, or crayons (brown, tan, yellow, black)
- Scissors
- Glue
- Googly eye (optional)
How to Make a Paper Plate Bald Eagle
Step 1 — Cut out the template. Print and cut out all the template pieces — the body, wing, head, tail, beak, and feet.
Step 2 — Color the body. Color the template pieces in brown, tan, yellow, and black as needed. Or for an extra fun twist, color half a paper plate brown and cut it in half to use as the eagle's body — it gives a great textured look!
Step 3 — Glue on the wing. Position the tan wing piece across the upper portion of the brown body and glue it down so it fans out naturally.
Step 4 — Glue on the head and tail. Attach the white head piece to the top of the body, angling it slightly forward for a proud eagle stance. Glue the white tail feathers to the back lower end of the body.
Step 5 — Glue on the feet and beak. Attach the yellow taloned feet to the bottom of the body and the bold yellow beak to the front of the head. Use a black marker to draw detail lines on both for a realistic finish.
Step 6 — Add the eye. Glue a googly eye just above the beak for extra personality, or draw one on with a black marker and add a fierce brow line above it. Let everything dry completely.

Tips for Making It Even Better
- Using two shades of brown — a darker brown for the body and a lighter tan for the wing — gives the eagle incredible depth and makes it look much more realistic.
- Add a small black eyebrow line above the eye for that iconic fierce eagle expression kids absolutely love.
- The paper plate body option gives the finished eagle a great textured look from the plate's ridged rim — definitely worth trying!
- This eagle looks amazing displayed against a red, white, and blue background for a full patriotic wall display around the 4th of July.
