Why Kids Love This Craft

Capybaras are having a major moment right now — kids absolutely love these giant, unbothered rodents, and this craft captures their iconic vibe perfectly. The big expressive snout and sleepy eyes are so fun to put together, and the rosy cheek patches add the cutest finishing touch. It's a wonderful craft for building fine motor skills through cutting, coloring, and gluing, and the finished capybara looks so good kids will want to make one for every member of the family.

What You'll Need

  • 6-inch paper plate or paper
  • 2 shades of brown paint/marker/crayon/paper
  • Light pink paint/marker/crayon/paper
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to Make a Paper Plate Capybara

Step 1 — Color the template and paper plate. Color the paper plate in your lighter shade of brown for the capybara's face. Color the template pieces as needed — darker brown for the nose and mouth piece and ears, and light pink for the cheek patches and inner ears.

Step 2 — Cut out the shapes. Carefully cut out all the template pieces — the large nose and mouth, ears, and cheek patches.

Step 3 — Glue on the nose and mouth. Position the large dark brown nose and mouth piece in the center-lower area of the plate and glue it down. This is the signature capybara feature that makes the whole craft come together!

Step 4 — Glue on the ears. Attach the ears to the top of the plate on either side with the pink inner ear showing.

Step 5 — Glue on the cheeks. Add the small pink cheek patches on either side of the nose for that sweet capybara blush.

Step 6 — Draw the finishing touches. Use a black marker to draw sleepy eyes with soft brow lines above them, nostrils on the snout, and a subtle mouth line. Let everything dry completely.

Your totally capy-tivating paper plate capybara is ready to chill! 🐾
