If your little ones love farm animals, this paper plate chicken craft is going to have them clucking with excitement! With a bright red comb and wattle, a bold yellow beak and legs, and hand-drawn feather details that give it so much personality, this adorable chicken comes together with just a paper plate and a handful of simple supplies. Whether you're exploring farm animal themes at home, planning a barnyard unit in the classroom, or just looking for a fun creative afternoon activity, this chicken craft is cluck-worthy from start to finish.

Why Kids Love This Craft

What makes this chicken so satisfying to make is the feather detail — kids use a black marker to draw short lines and speckles across the wing and body, and the result looks incredibly realistic for something made from a paper plate. There's also something deeply fun about assembling the bright red comb, the dangly wattle, and the chunky yellow legs — every piece that gets added makes the chicken look more and more alive. It's a fantastic craft for building fine motor skills through cutting, coloring, and careful gluing, and kids feel genuinely proud of how the finished chicken looks.

What You'll Need

  • 6-inch paper plate or paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Yellow, black, and red markers

How to Make a Paper Plate Chicken

Step 1 — Cut out all the shapes. Cut out all the template pieces — the body, wing, comb, wattle, beak, and legs.

Step 2 — Color as needed. Color the comb and wattle red, the beak and legs yellow, and use a black marker to add feather lines and speckle dots across the body and wing for that realistic chicken texture.

Step 3 — Glue on the wing. Position the wing on the right side of the body plate and glue it in place, angling it slightly upward for a natural look.

Step 4 — Glue on the wattle and comb. Attach the red comb to the top of the chicken's head and glue the wattle just below the beak area, letting it hang down slightly.

Step 5 — Glue on the beak and legs. Attach the yellow beak to the front of the head, then glue the yellow legs to the bottom of the body. Let everything dry completely.

Your totally cluck-worthy paper plate chicken is ready to strut! 🐔

Tips for Making It Even Better

  • The feather detail is what makes this chicken look amazing — encourage kids to add lots of short strokes and speckle dots rather than just a few. More is more!
  • Use red paper instead of coloring for the comb and wattle to get a bolder, more vibrant red that really pops against the white body.
  • Fold the legs slightly at the bottom to create little feet, giving the chicken a more dimensional, standing pose.
  • This craft pairs perfectly with other farm animal crafts for a full barnyard wall display — great for spring or Easter themes too!
