Whether you're exploring zoo animals at home, planning an Asian animal unit in the classroom, or just looking for a creative afternoon activity, this craft is beary cute from start to finish.

Why Kids Love This Craft

This panda craft has something really special going for it — the panda is actually hugging the bamboo, which makes the finished piece feel like a complete little scene. Kids absolutely love assembling all the layers and watching a flat paper plate transform into a fully dimensional panda. It's a wonderful craft for building fine motor skills through cutting, painting, and careful gluing, and the bold black-and-white color scheme means even younger kids can create something that looks really impressive.

What You'll Need

  • 6-inch paper plate
  • Paper for bamboo, face, and ears
  • Googly eyes (¼ inch)
  • Coloring tools (black, green, yellow, tan)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to Make a Paper Plate Panda

Step 1 — Paint half the plate black. Paint the bottom half of the paper plate black to create the panda's body. Let it dry completely before moving on.

Step 2 — Cut out the arm, leg, and eye mask. Use the template as a stencil to cut out the arm, leg, and eye mask pieces from paper, then color them black.

Step 3 — Glue the arm and leg to the body. Position the black arm and leg pieces onto the body plate and glue them in place.

Step 4 — Cut out and glue the head to the body. Cut out the head piece from the template and glue it to the top of the body.

Step 5 — Add the ears and nose. Color the ear and nose pieces black, then glue them onto the head in position.

Step 6 — Color the bamboo and leaves. Use a mix of tan, yellow, and light green to color the bamboo stalk and leaf pieces for a realistic jungle feel.

Step 7 — Attach the panda to the bamboo. Position the panda so the arm and leg wrap around the bamboo stalk like it's giving it a big hug, then glue everything in place.

Step 8 — Add the googly eyes. Glue two ¼-inch googly eyes onto the eye mask for maximum panda charm.

Step 9 — Draw the mouth. Use a black marker to draw a cute little smile below the nose. Let everything dry completely.

  • Take your time painting the half-black body — a clean line between black and white makes the finished panda look really polished.
  • Mixing tan, yellow, and green for the bamboo gives it a much more realistic look than using just one color.
  • Pair this panda with the paper plate koala, sloth, and giraffe for an epic zoo animal wall display!
