Rocking Uncle Sam Paper Plate Craft for Kids – Free Template

If your little ones love all things red, white, and blue, this Rocking Uncle Sam Paper Plate craft is going to be an absolute favorite! With a bold red and white striped top hat, a navy blue polka dot hat band, rosy pink cheeks, a big bushy white mustache, and the most expressive googly eyes you've ever seen on a patriotic icon, this Uncle Sam is as charming as he is easy to make. Whether you're celebrating Memorial Day at home, planning a Fourth of July theme in the classroom, or just looking for a fun patriotic craft, this Rocking Uncle Sam is guaranteed to bring out the American spirit from the very first fold of the paper plate.

Why Kids Love This Craft

There's something wonderfully silly about this Uncle Sam — the folded paper plate gives him a perfectly round rocking face, and kids love assembling all the pieces that make him look so unmistakably like America's most famous patriot. The striped hat feels bold and festive, the polka dot hat band adds a playful touch, and the bushy mustache makes every finished Uncle Sam look hilariously expressive. It's a wonderful craft for building fine motor skills through cutting, folding, and gluing, and because every kid positions the mustache and cheeks a little differently, no two Uncle Sams ever look exactly the same.

How to Make a Rocking Uncle Sam Paper Plate Craft

Step 1 — Print and cut out the template. Download the free Rocking Uncle Sam template from CraftyYak.com and carefully cut out all the pieces — the face circle, mustache, cheeks, hat top, hat band, and stars.

Step 2 — Trace onto patterned or colored paper. Use the template pieces as stencils to trace and cut the hat from red and white striped paper and the hat band from navy blue star paper. This is what gives Uncle Sam his iconic festive look!

Step 3 — Fold the paper plate in half. Fold your paper plate or cardstock circle in half along the fold line. This creates Uncle Sam's classic rounded rocking face shape — the white ridged edge of the plate makes a perfect built-in beard!

Step 4 — Glue on the mustache and cheeks. Glue the white mustache to the center of the face and the two pink circles on either side for rosy cheeks. Press them down firmly and let the glue set.

Step 5 — Add the googly eyes. Glue two googly eyes above the mustache for maximum Uncle Sam personality — or use the template eyes instead for a drawn-on look. Either way he's going to look absolutely perfect!

Step 6 — Draw on the nose. Using a black marker draw a small simple nose between the eyes and mustache to complete the face.

Step 7 — Assemble the hat. Glue the narrow striped hat top onto the wider hat base, then glue the navy blue star hat band strip across the bottom of the hat where the two pieces meet.

Step 8 — Glue the hat onto the head. Glue the finished hat onto the top of the folded paper plate face. Press it down firmly and let everything dry completely.

Your Rocking Uncle Sam is ready to celebrate!

Tips for Making It Even Better

  • Use actual patterned scrapbook paper for the hat instead of plain colored paper — red and white striped scrapbook paper makes the hat look incredibly striking and authentic.
  • Let kids choose their own googly eye size for extra personality — oversized googly eyes make Uncle Sam look hilariously expressive!
  • Press all glued pieces under a heavy book for a few minutes while they dry to get a clean flat finish with no lifting edges.
  • This Uncle Sam looks amazing displayed on a blue star-patterned background for a full patriotic bulletin board scene — perfect for a classroom Fourth of July display!
