Stars & Stripes Paper Chain Craft for Kids – Free Template
If your little ones love all things red, white, and blue, this Stars & Stripes Paper Chain craft is going to be an absolute showstopper! With alternating red and white paper chain stripes cascading down from a navy blue header crowned with three silver stars and finished with a white rope hanger, this patriotic decoration looks like something you'd find at a craft fair — but kids make it themselves from scratch. Whether you're celebrating Memorial Day at home, planning a patriotic theme in the classroom, or just looking for a fun holiday weekend project, this Stars & Stripes craft is guaranteed to bring out the patriotic spirit from the very first loop of the chain.
Why Kids Love This Craft
There's something deeply satisfying about building a paper chain — the loop, tuck, and glue rhythm is almost hypnotic for kids, and watching the stripes grow longer with every link is incredibly rewarding. The bold red and white color contrast looks stunning against the navy blue header, and kids love adding the silver stars and seeing the whole decoration come together. It's a wonderful craft for building fine motor skills through cutting, looping, and gluing, and because every kid spaces their chains a little differently, no two decorations ever look exactly the same.
What You'll Need
- Red and white construction paper or cardstock for the chains
- Navy blue cardstock for the header
- Silver or white cardstock for the stars
- White rope or twine for the hanger
- Glue or tape
- Scissors
- Hole punch
How to Make a Stars & Stripes Paper Chain
Step 1 — Print and cut out the template. Print the template and carefully cut out all the pieces — the header, stars, and paper chain strip guides.
Step 2 — Cut the paper chain strips. Using the template guides, cut your red and white construction paper into even strips. These will become the alternating stripes of your decoration — the more even your strips the cleaner the finished look!
Step 3 — Build your paper chains. Loop and glue your strips into interlocking chains, alternating red and white as you go. Make three chains of equal length so your stripes hang evenly side by side.
Step 4 — Prepare the navy blue header. Cut out the navy blue header rectangle and punch two holes at the top using a hole punch. This is the blue field of your flag where the stars will go.
Step 5 — Add the silver stars. Cut out three stars from silver or white cardstock using the template and glue them evenly across the navy blue header. Press them down firmly and let the glue dry before moving on.
Step 6 — Attach the paper chains. Glue or tape the top loop of each paper chain to the bottom edge of the navy blue header, spacing the three chains evenly across.
Step 7 — Add the rope hanger. Thread white rope or twine through the two holes at the top of the header and tie a knot on each end to secure it. Adjust the length of the hanger to your liking.

Tips for Making It Even Better
- Use cardstock instead of regular construction paper for the chain strips — it holds its shape better and gives the chains a cleaner, more polished finished look.
- Keep your chain strips the same width throughout for the most even and professional looking stripe effect.
- Add a small dab of extra glue at each chain link joint to make sure nothing pops open once it's hanging.
- This decoration looks amazing displayed on a front door or window where the chains can hang freely and catch the light — it gives the finished craft a beautiful dimensional quality!
